Application deadline - Friday, June 1st, 2018 Harvard Business School Association of Boston Community Action Partners (CAP) PROJECT APPLICATION 2018-2019 CAP Overview Community Action Partners (CAP) is a volunteer organization of Harvard Business School (HBS) and Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) alumni helping Boston-area nonprofits and social enterprises apply management skills to their business challenges. Founded in 1993, CAP operates under the aegis of the HBS Association of Boston. More than 100 alumni volunteers serve 13-16 nonprofits each year. Since inception, more than 1,000 CAP volunteers have served over 300 nonprofit clients in areas such as: strategic planning, market research and marketing strategy, financial planning and analysis, board development and governance, and organizational development. Client Criteria Potential clients must meet the following criteria: Charitable nonprofit organization with IRS 501(c)(3) status or other officially designated social enterprise Headquartered in Greater Boston A mission which provides the Greater Boston/New England community with a social benefit A minimum of five paid full-time staff, as well as a board of directors Stable leadership in the organization (ED tenure exceeds one year) Administrative capacity and commitment to oversee and support the consulting work Not currently in a crisis situation which would require more urgent assistance Project Criteria Potential projects must meet the following criteria: Deal with business or management-related issues in the organization, such as strategic planning, organizational development, finance, or marketing Not focused primarily on development / fundraising strategy or implementation Have goals which are well-defined and achievable by a volunteer team of about six consultants working two to four hours per week each for approximately six months Have the sponsorship of the organization's leadership, including both staff and the board Timeline Client applications due June 1st (earlier if possible) Phone interviews and site visits to meet with staff and board leadership in June or July Volunteers choose from semi-finalist projects in August Volunteers and clients matched, project list finalized by mid-September Volunteer orientation early October Teams begin client work mid-October Teams complete work May 2019 Applicants will be notified of their status by email or phone at each stage of the process.
